For what willpower can't fix

The kitchen at eleven at night

You know the moment. You are both in the kitchen, moving around each other like roommates on a lease neither of you can break. The dishwasher is running. Nobody is yelling. Nobody is crying. A voice in the back of your mind asks whether this is it.

You have tried the rational things. Talked it out over wine that turned into an argument by the second glass. Given each other space that quietly became avoidance. Asked ChatGPT at 1 a.m. and got a pep talk that lasted twenty minutes.

You solve hard problems for a living. So why does this relationship keep winning?

Keep reading and you will know what this work costs, how long it takes, what changes at home, and whether it fits the two of you before you ever speak to anyone.

What makes the work different

Four principles that shape every session.

None of these is a philosophy statement. Each one changes something concrete about how your sessions run, what gets measured, and what you are asked to do between them.

01

Beneath the symptoms

I look past surface-level anxiety, conflict, and burnout to address the deeper emotional and relational patterns driving them.

02

Real change, not just insight

Understanding yourself matters, but it’s not the goal. My work translates insight into lasting emotional and behavioral change.

03

Measured and accountable

I track progress with validated outcome measures, so you always know what’s working, and what needs to shift.

Built for demanding lives

Fully online and intentionally structured for executives, physicians, and professionals with serious schedules. Real depth, no disruption.

WHAT SELF-RELIANCE COSTS

Why capable people wait longest to try marriage counseling

Somewhere early you learned that if you handle it yourself, nothing bad happens. That rule carried you through residency, through the deposition, through the year the company nearly went under.

Then it met the one problem it cannot touch. You cannot out-manage a marriage. Handling it alone is what built the emotional distance in the first place. Struggling quietly is the norm among capable people, and it is also what makes couples wait years before they begin.

Asking for support is not the end of competence. It is the first way out that does not require either of you to be stronger than the pattern.

There is a South Florida version of this. The photos look like a vacation. The house is beautiful, the calendar is full, and from the outside there is nothing to fix. That makes it harder to say out loud that something is broken, even to each other.

Who this couples therapy is for

Physicians. Attorneys. Business owners. Finance and real estate people who moved a firm, a fund, or a family to South Florida and have not slowed down since. Young professionals building something that eats the calendar. Parents whose children just left for Gainesville. Most clients arrive during life transitions big enough to move the furniture: a relocation, a diagnosis, a new baby, a business sale, a loved one in the guest room. Transitions do not create the pattern. They expose it. Family dynamics that held for a decade stop holding in a single season.

One of you is feeling stuck in a role nobody chose out loud. The other one has started to feel misunderstood inside their own kitchen. Anxiety rides along, sometimes depression too, until an ordinary Tuesday can feel overwhelming. Mental health does not stay in its lane. It walks through the whole house.

The move to South Florida was supposed to fix this

One of you wanted it more. The other one said yes, sold the house, and learned a new grocery store. Now the weather is perfect, the commute is gone, and the same argument you had in Westchester or Chicago is sitting in a brighter kitchen. A relocation does not resolve a pattern. It removes the distractions that used to hide it.

Then come the parts nobody counted. Your oldest friends are a flight away. The grandparents who took the kids every Saturday are in another time zone. One of you built a network in South Florida in six months through work. The other one is still waiting to be introduced to somebody. That imbalance turns into resentment faster than any fight about money ever does.

What couples counseling in South Florida addresses

Infidelity and the long rebuild of trust. Parenting disagreements. Financial stress. Emotional distance that crept in across years. The loss of emotional intimacy neither person knows how to name. Conflict resolution too, meaning real strategies for handling intense disagreements without escalation.

Emotional disconnection is the most common challenge high-functioning couples bring to therapy, and it never arrives as a crisis. It arrives as fewer real conversations inside a house that runs beautifully. Counseling that works restores connection first and logistics second, because two people who feel heard can solve the logistics themselves.

A relationship is not a feeling. It is a set of habits that either protect the two of you or quietly wear you down. When a relationship is working, small repairs happen so fast that neither of you notices them. When a relationship is in trouble, those same small ruptures sit there collecting interest. That is why the work targets the pattern instead of the personalities. You do not have a bad relationship because one of you is the problem. You have a relationship running an old program that once kept you safe. The goal is not a flawless relationship. The goal is a relationship where hard conversations are survivable and repair becomes ordinary.

The Loving at Your Best Plan

Four proven models, working together.

Most couples counseling is improvised from individual therapy. This is not. Each model below is a distinct post-graduate training, and in session they work together around what is happening between the two of you.

01

A tone. An eye roll. The way one of you leaves mid-sentence. In Gottman’s studies those moments predicted whether a marriage lasted with over 94 percent accuracy. Travis has been reading them in real couples since 1998, and you’ll get communication skills you can use tonight.

02

Asking for closeness started to feel like begging. EFT rebuilds the connection so reaching for each other can feel safe again. Seventy-three percent of distressed couples recover. Travis built the first EFT program for same-sex couples with Sue Johnson, EFT’s founder.

03

Different trigger, same explosion, same silent morning. You’ve started to believe it’s who you are together. It’s a pattern older than your marriage, and it has a treatment. Travis co-created Schema Therapy for couples. The argument you gave up on may be six sessions from never happening again.

04

When distorted thinking and old habits are driving the fight, CBT for couples interrupts the mechanics. It joins the plan when what you need is concrete tools rather than more insight.

The pattern, not the fight
The fight is almost never about the thing you are fighting about.
It is about the pattern underneath. That is what we map in the first session, and what more than thirty years of reading couples has trained Travis to see.

OUR APPROACH

The model matters, and the therapist using it matters too.

A license permits a clinician to treat couples. It does not show how deeply that clinician has trained in couple therapy, or whether their work with real couples has ever been evaluated.

Research does not point to one couple therapy model as best for every couple. Outcomes also depend on the therapist’s ability to earn trust with both partners, recognize what keeps a pattern in place, and adapt when a couple gets stuck.

That skill matters most in the harder cases: betrayal, longstanding wounds, high conflict, and couples who tried therapy before without lasting change.

Travis Atkinson is a Certified Gottman Method Couples Therapist, a Certified Emotionally Focused Couple Therapist and Supervisor, and an Advanced Certified Schema Therapist, Supervisor, and Trainer.

Each certification required postgraduate study, supervised clinical work, and an evaluation of demonstrated skill, not simply attendance at a course.

Mentored by Jeffrey Young and the late Sue Johnson, Travis helped develop Schema Therapy for Couples and has trained therapists internationally. He is an Honorary Lifetime Member of the International Society of Schema Therapy, with three decades in the field.

Anxiety that won't let up

The racing thoughts. The constant vigilance. The sense that something’s wrong even when nothing is.

RELATIONAL PATTERNS

Closeness that keeps breaking

The same conflicts. The same distance. The pattern you can see clearly but can’t seem to stop repeating.

SELF-WORTH PATTERNS

Success that doesn't land

You’ve built the life. The career. The things that were supposed to matter. And still something feels hollow or out of reach.

ABOUT

How to choose a couples therapist in South Florida

Ask any clinician you are considering three questions. Which couples therapy model did you train in after graduate school? How many couples do you see each week? What happens if the counseling is not working by session eight?

A clinician trained in a couples model answers those in a sentence each. Most cannot answer them at all. That one filter protects your relationship better than any directory listing, because couples counseling is its own skill and not a subspecialty of individual therapy.

Clients often tell me they spent a year in the wrong counseling before they found the right services. That year cost them more than money. It moved the relationship closer to divorce than any single fight ever did.

How the counseling process works

Every couple starts with an assessment, not a sales call. It opens with a joint session, then one individual session with each of you, then a feedback session where we set goals. Booking the first session doesn’t commit you to all four. The wrong match costs a couple months of their life, so I would rather find that out in session one than in session six.

Sessions run weekly, online, in a space where both of you can speak without the hour turning into a tribunal. This is trauma informed therapy, patient with history and direct about patterns. Research published in 2024 on more than 1,100 married clients found outcomes equal to in person sessions. Because the practice is online, couples join from anywhere in Florida, from Fort Lauderdale and Coral Gables to Orlando, South Tampa, and Jacksonville. Progress is tracked with validated outcome measures. The course is measured in months, not years.

“Therapist training and skill matter most in the hardest cases: betrayal, entrenched patterns, high conflict, and couples who have tried therapy before without lasting change.”

No couples therapy model works if the therapist has not trained deeply in it. That training is what this practice was built on.

What changes, and how a deep understanding shows up at home

Nobody notices the moment it turns. What you notice is a Thursday. An argument about the dishwasher that ends in four minutes instead of four days. A question asked at a red light that gets a real answer. Laughter in the next room, and you know exactly who caused it.

Lasting change is a run of small positive changes that compound. Couples describe more balance in how the load gets carried, emotional intimacy they had written off, and steadier emotional well being that shows up in how they parent, how they work, and how they sleep. The healing reaches the families around you. Personal growth happens for each of you separately, and it tends to outlast the therapy.

If you are feeling stuck, start with the smallest possible step. Book a first session and say the hard thing out loud to someone whose work is to hear it accurately. Nothing gets decided in that first hour. For some couples the honest answer is that stress and untreated anxiety are doing most of the damage. For others it is depression in one household that has quietly reorganized everything around it. Naming that can feel overwhelming for about ninety seconds. Then it gets lighter, because a named problem has a size.

Family systems: what everyone at home already knows

The healing does not stop at the two of you. Families absorb tension and families absorb repair, and couples who do this work often say what their children noticed first was the sound of the house. Two adults who stop bracing create a different atmosphere without announcing it. When couples ask whether to stay together, families are usually holding their breath, and clarity beats a slow slide toward divorce. Depression and anxiety lift unevenly, sometimes in one of you first, and understanding why that happens is part of the work. You get expert guidance from a clinician who has watched these patterns for three decades, delivered with compassion rather than verdicts, and the healing reaches the lives around you.

Most of my clients are not new to therapy. They are clients who tried it once, found it too gentle for the challenges they brought, and quietly stopped going. Those two lives had already adapted around the problem, and the relationship kept paying the bill. Clients who stay are usually the ones who wanted somebody to name the pattern out loud, so the work fits the lives they actually have.

What marriage therapy South Florida couples ask first

What does couples counseling cost, and do you take insurance?

Current fees appear when you book online. The practice is out of network and provides superbills for reimbursement. Many of my clients are self-employed or carry a high deductible plan, so out of network is already how they use care. Paying privately also keeps your mental health record out of an insurer’s file. If cost is the real barrier, community counseling services and university clinics across the South Florida community offer sliding scale support.

How long does couples counseling take?

Most couples work weekly for several months. You should feel a shift within six to eight sessions. If nothing has moved by then, that is information, and I say so rather than let you keep paying.

What if only one of us wants to come?

Common, and workable. Individual therapy on a relationship creates real movement, and many reluctant partners join once they see the sessions are not a tribunal.

What if we are not sure we want to stay together?

Come anyway. Clarity about the future is a legitimate use of couples counseling, and either answer is easier to live with when you reach it from understanding rather than exhaustion. Clarity is not the same as divorce. Plenty of couples who arrive unsure end up staying, on better terms than before.

Plenty of people arrive already saying the word divorce out loud. Sometimes divorce is the honest answer, and I will not talk you out of it to keep a relationship on life support. More often the word is a flare. It means one of you has run out of ways to be heard. Couples therapy that takes divorce seriously is the only kind worth doing, because it makes both of you name the future you are actually choosing. Some couples finish this work with a stronger relationship than they have had in a decade. A few finish with a plan to separate that protects the children and protects each future. Both are real outcomes. Neither one arrives by drifting.

What the first month of counseling looks like

Session one is map-making. You each tell the story of the relationship, and the clinician listens for the loop rather than the incident.

Session two goes to the feelings underneath the loop. Most partners are surprised by what the other one says in session, because the feelings were never the problem. Hiding them was.

By session three or four you have a name for the pattern and one small experiment to run at home. Counseling moves faster when the work continues between sessions.

By session six or eight, couples counseling should have shifted something real. If it has not, I say so, and we either change the plan or point you toward services that fit your relationship better.

When mental health has to come before couples counseling

Sometimes the relationship is not the presenting problem. Untreated depression, unmanaged anxiety, active addiction, or a mental health crisis in one partner will outrun any couples therapy.

In those cases individual therapy comes first, and I will help you find that path. You hear that during the assessment, not three months later.

Safety comes before everything. If there is violence or intimidation in the relationship, couples counseling can make things more dangerous, and I will say so plainly and point you toward the right support.

Individual psychotherapy when one of you starts alone

Often one of you reaches out first. You are reading this at the kitchen table while the house is quiet, and you are not certain your spouse would even agree to come. Start anyway. Individual psychotherapy with a clinician who does this work every day is not a consolation prize. It changes what you carry into the room. It often changes what your spouse is willing to try six weeks later.

Many of the couples I work with began exactly that way, with a single appointment. Nobody was persuaded by an argument. They were persuaded by watching someone they love get steadier.

Why do most South Florida couples choose online sessions, from Boca Raton to Key Biscayne?

There is also the part nobody says out loud. South Florida is smaller than it looks. A waiting room in Boca or Coral Gables is a place where you can run into somebody from your child’s school, your club or your board. Online sessions remove that math. You close a door at home or at the office, and nobody knows anything you did not choose to tell them.

Then there is the drive. A weekly appointment that costs ninety minutes on I-95 each way quietly dies by February. Online keeps the work going through season, through travel, through the week one of you is in Bogotá or back up north.

Regular sessions are online. When a couple needs concentrated time together, in-person work may be available as part of a specially arranged intensive, usually planned around travel. We can talk about whether that fits once we have met.

Two couples can describe the same silence and need different help. What we build together fits your relationship, your history and the particular challenges the two of you bring, which a workbook can only guess at. Patterns loosen once somebody names them.

Most couples who reach out are tired more than they are in crisis. Years of stress get absorbed, and the anxiety of managing a relationship alone becomes the background noise of two lives. What you get from this work is directness with compassion, a clear sense of what has been happening between you, and hope that rests on evidence. Communication improves along the way. This is couples work you can reach from Fort Lauderdale, Miami or a hotel room in Orlando.

Where do we begin?

Go back to that kitchen, two people moving around each other and a voice asking whether this is it.

The distance standing in that kitchen means something most couples miss. Both of you got good at protecting yourselves, so good that the protection outlived the thing it was built for. Love is usually still under it.

The first session is where we start making sense of what has been running between you, and whether this kind of therapy fits. Every couple I meet is convinced they are the only ones living like this. None of them is.

The relationship is still there. It sits underneath something the two of you built for good reasons, and the two people standing in that kitchen are closer than they feel. If another kind of help would serve you better, I say so early. That is how two lives stop running parallel and start overlapping again.

Neurodivergent Couples

When one partner is wired differently, the usual relationship advice often misses the real dynamic. Travis works with the specific patterns these relationships face.

Autism Spectrum and Your Relationship

The loneliness in a neurodiverse marriage rarely looks like conflict. It looks like reaching for connection and finding none, even when your partner is a good and committed person. The work focuses on translation between two different ways of experiencing closeness, so both partners feel understood.

ADHD and Your Relationship

ADHD reshapes how attention, follow-through, and emotional regulation move through a relationship. Resentment builds when one partner becomes the manager of everything and the other feels constantly criticized. The work breaks that cycle and rebuilds a partnership of equals.

OCPD in Relationships

Obsessive-compulsive personality patterns bring a need for control, rigidity, and high standards that can quietly erode intimacy. The work helps couples loosen the grip of those patterns and make room for flexibility, warmth, and genuine connection.

Working with Travis

The practice is out of network and provides superbills for reimbursement. After an initial assessment phase, couples who continue can reserve their work through preferred-client session plans. Travis takes on a limited number of couples to protect the depth and continuity of the work.

You don't need another six years to know what you already know.

Six years of the same argument. Six years of sleeping on opposite sides of the bed. Six years of telling yourself it’s not bad enough, that other couples have it worse, that you should be able to figure this out on your own.

Couples who begin sooner, with a therapist trained deeply in a couples model, tend to see change faster. Couples who wait often come to believe the relationship itself was the problem. Usually it wasn’t. The fit with the right approach was missing.
