Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about therapy at New York Therapy — our services, process, and how online therapy works.
If you have a question that isn't answered here, feel free to reach out directly or schedule a consultation call. We're happy to talk through anything before you decide to begin.
Getting Started
If you're noticing patterns in your relationships, mood, or behavior that keep repeating despite your efforts to change them — or if you're going through something difficult and feel stuck — therapy is likely to be useful. Most people who benefit from therapy aren't in crisis; they simply want more from their lives and relationships than they're currently getting.
The first session is primarily about getting to know you. Your therapist will ask about what's bringing you in, your history, what you've tried before, and what you're hoping to get from therapy. It's also a chance for you to get a sense of whether the therapist feels like a good fit. There's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with.
Yes. We offer a brief consultation call — usually 15–20 minutes — where you can ask questions, learn about our approach, and determine whether it seems like a good match. There's no obligation. You can schedule a consultation here.
It depends on what you're working on and your goals. Some focused concerns can be addressed in 3–6 months of weekly sessions. Longer-standing patterns — particularly those rooted in early experience — often take longer. We'll be transparent with you about expectations as we get to know your situation.
Online Therapy
Yes. Research consistently shows that online therapy produces outcomes equivalent to in-person therapy for the vast majority of presentations. Many clients actually prefer the convenience and privacy of working from home, and some find it easier to open up in their own environment.
We are licensed in New York State and see clients who are physically located in New York State at the time of each session. This includes New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island) as well as anywhere else in the state.
A device with a camera and microphone (laptop, tablet, or phone), a stable internet connection, and a private space where you won't be overheard. Sessions are conducted over a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. We'll send you a link before each session.
Our Approach
We specialize in Schema Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Gottman Method, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), as well as Mindsight-informed approaches. Our therapists integrate these frameworks rather than applying any single approach rigidly. You can learn more on our Services page.
Yes. We offer couples therapy using both the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), two of the most extensively researched approaches to couples work. We see couples navigating conflict, communication difficulties, infidelity, transitions, and intimacy challenges.
Yes. We run structured therapy groups, including a men's therapy group grounded in Schema Therapy, CBT, and ACT. Group therapy offers a unique opportunity to work on relational patterns in real time with peers. Contact us to ask about current group availability.
Fees & Scheduling
We are an out-of-network practice. We do not bill insurance directly, but we can provide a superbill (a detailed receipt) that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Many clients with PPO plans receive partial reimbursement. We recommend calling your insurance provider to ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits before starting.
The easiest way is to use our online booking page or to reach out through our contact form. We'll get back to you promptly to confirm a time.
